  • Deborah Lawton LPC

Deborah is a Washington D.C. and Virginia State Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). Deborah completed her Master of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology at the University of Texas. Using talk, play and expressive therapies, Deborah works with children, adolescents, adults and families to address a range of issues, including anxiety, substance abuse/addiction, PTSD, depression, abuse/neglect, self-harm, suicidality, anger, family conflict, attachment, psychosis and thought disorders. She specializes in treating issues related to trauma, neglect and abuse, as well as co-occurring disorders (mental illness and substance abuse).

Counseling Experience

Deborah is certified in Co-Occurring Disorders, and is trained in Integrated Dual Diagnosis Treatment for concurrent substance use and mental health issues. Deborah is currently working towards certification as a Registered Play Therapist (RPT) and has specialized training in play therapy, expressive and art therapies, trauma treatment, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and crisis intervention. Deborah is experienced in conducting clinical assessments and in providing individual, group, and family therapy in various settings. She has worked in inpatient, partial hospitalization, and outpatient settings, as well as in community-based and intensive in-home services. Deborah has also managed clinical programs and supervised teams of clinicians providing services to at-risk youth and their families in both Washington D.C. and in Virginia.

Deborah remains active in research by reviewing manuscripts for the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society and by serving on the Institutional Review Board of the Trauma Institute & Child Trauma Institute.
